Overview
On a day to day basis my role usually involves a morning briefing with the team you are currently booked to/working with. Within this meeting tasks can be assigned to you or you can be asked to help/support a team member working on a chunk of work that requires more than one person. Usually they will run through what they would like you to do and then let you go and work on the remainder of the task by yourself. you would then report back with your completed work and then can either have to fix mistakes or will be supplied with more work. if you have no work then you can work on 'intern' specific work which is supplied by external sources.
Skills
For me personally I came into the assurance team with very little knowledge or expertise with regards to audit or accounting so initially had to take a step back and strengthen my overall knowledge of what an audit is before being able to fully understand and develop my skills in the audit. Is fair to say that upon finishing my internship I am much more aware and could very much talk through the overview of the process and be able to provide some detail on some of the tasks required within the audit that I myself have performed.
Responsibilities
It is very hard to be given such responsibility such early on especially if you have no prior knowledge and so have no idea what to do. But what i can say is that as you learn more throughout the internship you get watched over much less as you are more confident to be able to do the tasks required of you. Of course all your work is reviewed by many people before it will go to a client and so there are always people you can reach out to for any support or questions you have and people are always very willing to help.
Support & Guidance
Every team i worked with was always very helpful and always willing to answer any questions you have. This can be task specific or none task specific and so were always open and honest of what they thought of the company and what their experiences were and how you can learn from them and use it to develop your own knowledge and skills which is something that is always beneficial no matter what service line/department you are working within.
Culture
Everyone was excellent in my experience. no matter what their title was you could always reach out and strike up a conversation with anyone even if they were not in your department. The only drawback that I definitely noticed was how quiet the office was sometimes which as an intern is not really the experience you want but in these new times was always expected after the changes Covid-19 brought about with flexible and remote working.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my time with EY. I think the aspect i enjoyed the most was definitely the culture and the people that made it for me. There is no one in the office that you couldn't speak to and when the office was busy it had a really good atmosphere surrounding it. Again the only downside was when the office was empty as most people were working from home you can definitely feel the lack of energy.
Yes
Think really important to go in open minded, especially if you are going into a service line/department that you have never been in before or had no prior knowledge of before. Also one massive bit if advice i would give would be to speak to as many people in the office as possible and ask them of their experiences and what they like what they don't and it gives a really good grasp of how your team/department is performing as a whole.
