    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role was to assist my assigned team with work. This involved joining client calls in which they would walkthrough IT processes which dealt with managing access, change and operations. For example, making sure only the right people have access to certain information and only approved change takes place. We then create document request lists which is sent to the client which highlights the evidence required to prove they are following the procedures necessary. I would take minutes and draft them up to be sent to clients. There was also plenty of leadership training and other courses which helped with the job.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • This was my first office job so a one of the new skills was getting used to office life. I learnt how to interact and communicate with colleagues. I also learnt more about teams and how it is used within an organisation. It may sound simple but little things like organising a meeting are things I was not used to doing before. I did a lot of training throughout my internship, mainly focusing on leadership skills and coaching with studyflex. I have also learnt more about the role and what it involves.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. Initially I was listening in on client calls and taking minutes. I'd then receive other people's notes and create an official minutes which would be sent out to clients. This allowed me to gain a better understanding of various processes. Once I gained more knowledge I drafted things called process narratives which identifies the processes associated with certain applications and the controls in place to mitigate risks. These would be uploaded to a share point for the clients to look at. Additionally I updated some spreadsheets, using excel, with this financial years evidence.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Everyone was always open to questions and I was made to feel there were no silly questions. The culture is so welcoming and inclusive and people made me feel part of the team straight away. This was probably the thing I enjoyed most about the internship. You could work independently but there was always someone who was available to help when you needed it, whether that be your buddy, counsellor, manager or a team mate, everyone was there to help.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture was very positive and inclusive. There was not a hierarchy within the office and you would be sat next to people of all different positions. Everyone would get on with work but was still always open to lend a hand if you needed it. Even people outside my team would approach me as they recognised a new face in the office. I felt like I fit straight in and there was no uncomfortable settling stage. Additionally, there were plenty of social events to get to know your team better in a casual setting.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and would recommend it to anyone who is considering a job at a firm like EY or in the accounting, auditing and consulting sector. It gives you a good taste of what sort of work the job involves and shows you how a team interacts. The company culture was probably my favourite part of the internship and was so impressed with how well people welcome you into the company. The placement exceeded my expectations and I would strongly consider a role at EY in the future.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • Keep calm during the application process. Answer the questions to the best of your ability and during video answers, take a deep breath and be relevant with your answers. With the assessment day, make yourself known and speak up! You need to show you are a good team player. If someone seems quiet, try to bring them into the conversation. Research the company's goals and aspirations and make sure they align with your own beliefs. For the final interview, make sure you understand the role you are applying for and think about how your experiences previously make you suitable for the role.
