    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • On a day-to-day basis, I would get into the office and meet up with my person that I was assigned to that day. We would typically have an hour discussion about their work, their career and anything else that I had questions on. Then I would either join calls that they were in, start work that they had for me or go into client meetings. We would typically then have a final chat at the end of the day about how it all went and if there was anything else I wanted to find out before moving onto the next person tomorrow.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I have developed lots of my pre-existing skills and have also gained some new ones. Firstly, my excel skillset has improved a lot through the work I have done on it and through getting help from the other employees with certain things. In terms of developing skills, I have learnt how to interact with people of differing seniority within the business from partners and directors to graduates. This has been very useful and I see it being a big asset for the future.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given a lot more than I expected. This responsibility ranged from client meetings to client work. I would sometimes be drafting up emails for clients that although would be screened before being sent off, felt like it held quite a lot of responsibility. I also went through documents and even with my limited tax knowledge, was trusted to go through and make amendments from other areas of information. Again, these would be checked however it felt nice that they trusted me.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support during my internship. The team I was working with were incredibly friendly and were always willing to take time out of their busy schedules to help. This helped me improve on my skills very quickly as they had all the knowledge required and therefore were good at teaching the processes. I also received guidance on career opportunities from their own experience and support towards a career path that I decided.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I have been pleasantly surprised by how nice the team culture is. Its a very encouraging place to be and they push for an environment where no question is a stupid question. This has meant that people aren't afraid to seek help from one-another and therefore helps to improve the efficiency of the company. Everyone is really friendly as well which makes it easy to approach anyone and seek their advice. The atmosphere is relaxed yet constructive.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship. It has been my first proper experience of an office job and I have enjoyed every moment of it. I believe a lot of this is down to the team I was working with as they were very friendly and supportive therefore helping me to enjoy my work. It has also been interesting seeing all the different clientele and projects that the team are working on which has been a huge benefit of being able to work with different people each day

  • 7. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • I would say the biggest advice is have a basic understanding of what the company does and the area that you are hoping to go into then. Then it's also important to be able to show your soft skills and willingness to learn, it doesn't matter if you come into the job not knowing a huge amount of the technical side so long as you have the right attitude and willingness to learn.
