Overview
On a day-to-day basis, I will work alongside a graduate or a school leaver on my engagement. They will discuss each task that I should complete and are very approachable when I have any questions. I have worked closely with the debtors/ creditors and cash. The tasks have included completing a lead schedule and cut-off statements. During the tasks I have had to request information with the client. In addition, I was able to visit a client site and get to meet the client’s finance team in person.
Skills
During my internship I have developed my IT skills significantly. In the world of audit, it is important that one’s IT skills are to a high standard. Although, it’s not essential that one’s IT skills are of high standard when they start the internship. One should be familiar with Excel as it is used everyday. During the internship I have also completed certificate learning which I will receive 4 different certificates for. This took place in the format of a zoom call and then I had to complete a reflection form.
Responsibilities
The amount of responsibility I was given surprised me – I was given a lot more responsibility than expected. Before I started the internship I expected to be getting the seniors coffees and shadowing them doing their work. However, this is not the case – interns are given a lot of client work to complete. This is not to be feared, this provides for great experience and you will be able to ask loads of questions when you are stuck. In addition, all your work will be reviewed by the person you are working alongside.
Support & Guidance
During my internship I was given a lot of support and guidance which allowed me to complete tasks to a high standard. When one has any questions, everyone is very nice and approachable at EY. During your time, you will be told ‘no question is a silly question’ and are encouraged to ask as many questions as possible. When you ask anyone a question, they will instantly help you and take their time and provide a full explanation until you understand.
Culture
The culture and general atmosphere at EY are unique compared to any other accounting firm. During my first week, a culture show, a roadshow and a team quiz all took place. These were great events to network and meet people from the office. In addition, I was able to attend their Summer Reunion party which was a great ice breaker. I believe they take a real collaborative approach to any task which makes the office feel very friendly.
Your Impressions
I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship. Everyone at the Newcastle office and my fellow interns had a huge impact on my internship experience. Every week, the buddies and interns arranged to go for food and drinks which made us become close. In addition, the EY recruitment team put a lot of effort into the internship programme. The EY recruitment team planned an overnight induction event and a final event which have been great to meet everyone.
Yes
I would advise everyone doing an internship to keep an in-detail diary everyday. This will enable you to look back at how to complete tasks and will help when you have to fill out your timesheet. In addition, I would advise to make plans with the fellow interns and buddies outside of office times to form a close connection. Finally, I would recommend to speak to as many people as possible and give 110% effort into every task.
