    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Talent Transformation Support This role will support the UKI Talent Development Leaders and SMEs to develop account plans, sector initiatives, develop assets and offerings for Talent Development practitioners, help engage the community in knowledge sharing activities. The intern will also have an opportunity to work on a client project during their placement which will help support teams with junior resources outside of normal graduates or apprentices. You'll also create the monthly Newsletter.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I've definitely developed my soft skills. Things like presenting, and time management. I've become a lot more confident and decisive. I've also strengthened my technical abilities. Before this year I'd hardly used Excel, so I'm a lot more comfortable with that. I create a newsletter each month using Adobe InDesign - which has given me a better grasp on using all of the Adobe products available.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I'd say it's a pretty perfect environment when it comes to responsibilty. I've been trusted with a number of responsibilities, these can create pressure as you learn how to manage them. However, you're an intern. You aren't expected to get everything right first time. Your team will be very lenient - supportive and understanding when you get things wrong/fail to deliver on time etc. It's just the learning process.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Plenty, there is a whole team of people who's job is to support you. You'll have a task manager who you'll develop a close relationship with, they willl mentor you, give you work, and make sure you're ok. There's also plenty of other interns, who are all going through the same thing as you, so if you're ever struggling with anything, you're not alone.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very friendly and open. You'll spend time helping out in very different parts of the hierarchy. I would say IBM is good in sense, everyone is respected, regardless of age. You will likely be working closely with Senior Management, and you will find that they still value your opinion even if you are just an intern. There's alse a lot of great communities to join. And plenty of socials with other interns.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I would say that I definitely have enjoyed my placement. There definitley are times where it's tough, and you may find the odd bit of work boring. But I think that's just the working world really. I have gained so much confidence over the year, and had huge exposure to all sorts of business areas I didn't know existed. It has been invaluable experience.

  • 7. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • I would make sure that you are interview ready, I found it fine, but I think you're definitely at an advantage if you prep answers to common questions. What's you biggest strength etc. Also make sure to talk about significant thing's you've done, and try to relate it to IBM/the business world. Telling an amusing but still relevant story about yourself, makes you memorable in the application process.
