Overview
Helping out with client work (including powerpoints, excel spreadsheets, reviewing documents/pieces of work), attending client meetings, shadowing senior members of the team, drafting emails, reaching out to overseas offices. Attending team meetings and meetings planned by the summer internship team. I was also given the opportunity to undertake a course over the 5 weeks in which we covered leadership styles, how to manage a team, what a coaching culture is. In this I would attend sessions and then complete extra work around the sessions.
Skills
I developed my existing skills such as my people skills, my confidence skills especially when speaking up, asking questions, following up on things or just giving my input in general. This happened especially because of the client work I undertook as I was able to see in practice how partners in my team would interact with clients in a meeting which taught me a lot. I also developed my technical skills as I learned more about tax.
Responsibilities
I was given quite a bit of responsibility during my internship as my team very much involved me in their projects and I was able to help out in quite important pieces of work which would be given to a client. However, there is only so much an intern can do, especially without professional qualifications. However, I feel that my team tried to involve me as much as possible and give me meaningful tasks to do.
Support & Guidance
I feel that there was a good support system in place. Within my team I had a counsellor and two buddies which supported me throughout my internship if I had any questions or needed anything. I had a lot of contact with them and they would reach out to me to check in on me. There was also a lot of support from the student recruitment team. We could reach out to them with anything and they would send us regular updates.
Culture
The culture at EY positively surprised me. It is a very supportive and welcome environment in which everyone is willing to help you and answer your questions. I feel that there is in general a good work-life balance which was positive to see. The environment is quite relaxed even though there is the expectation to work hard and do your best. There is the opportunity to build a lot of relationships including with more senior members of the team such as partners.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at EY. I really liked the team I was in as everyone was really supportive, welcoming and willing to help me and involve me in their projects. I feel that I had the opportunity to undertake meaningful work and it was great to have contact with really big and important clients. The overall company culture at EY is very inclusive, collaborative and welcoming and there is a positive work environment.
Yes
I was offered the summer internship off the back of an insight scheme I undertook in my second year of university. I would definitely recommend starting research early as I gained an early insight into EY before the summer internship which was helpful and it means that I have built a good relationship with EY. I would definitely recommend applying to EY as it is a great firm to work for and it opens up a lot of opportunities.
