Overview
I was an intern in the Global Compliance and reporting team within the tax division. On a daily basis the role consisted of attending client meetings, helping with business proposals, calculating business fees and helping with other work for clients. Lots of the tasks I was set were quite admin based but this helped to develop my excel skills. As well as this, I attended many internal meetings within the GCR team such as Lunch and Learns, resourcing meetings and other social opportunities.
Skills
I have developed my skills in excel from the work that I was doing as well as doing an EY badge in data science. I have learnt a lot of professional skills in terms of what is expected of you in a work environment. These are the types of skills I believe will help when partaking in job simulations in the future. My accounting knowledge has also improved since working within the tax sector as I have been introduced to computations as well as reading through many P&L accounts.
Responsibilities
I was given some responsibility within my internship in that I was able to help out on some projects for big clients. This was really enjoyable as I was able to see the work that my colleagues did when working with clients. Separate to this, I do not think I was given too much responsibility on my internship. A lot of the work I took part in was admin based which did not give me a full overview of what the job would entail.
Support & Guidance
I was given a good amount of support and guidance during my internship. I had a counselor as well as a buddy on my team who were both always willing to help. Everyone else in my team was also very welcoming and was always willing to give guidance when needed. Everyone on my team was very approachable and if I ever had issues with the work I was doing I was not worried to ask for help.
Culture
During my internship there were no socials for my team which was a shame as it would have been nice to network with them more in a less formal setting. However I did get to go to a level 1 social as well as multiple intern socials which were really nice and helped me to settle in to the office and make friends. The general atmosphere within the team was really lovely and I got along with most people I met.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship. I especially liked the team I was working with and I think this really helped with how quickly I settled in and how well I got along with everyone. I did enjoy the work that I did and I did develop some skills, however I do not think that it gave me the full experience of what an employee within tax would do. Having said this, the internship did exceed my expectations and I enjoyed it more than I was expecting to. I would go back.
Yes
When applying and taking part in the interview process, practice really is key and research of EY. I would have loved to have known that there is no employee template for EY and they do really encourage you to just be yourself. You are not expected to act in a certain way and they are understanding that you have your own personality and interests and this is encouraged. Before partaking in the internship I was worried that people would be very competitive and I would be expected to work very long hours outside of my contracted time but this was not the case at all. As long as you are willing to have a go at work and let people know when it will be completed by, everyone is very understanding and wants you to enjoy yourself out of work.
