Overview
In office every day spending 4 weeks in each department. A huge range of jobs including client and non-client work which then get passed onto graduates and more senior members to check. Includes spreadsheet work, coding, modelling - much more responsibility than expected (a good thing!). There are 4 assessments/tasks throughout the internship assessing presentation skills, reasoning behind predictions, team work etc. There is also opportunities to organise social events and update event calendars.
Skills
Despite being competent before, excel spreadsheet skills have improved massively. Skills related to working in a professional environment, task prioritisation and workload management have improved. Developed skills in R with coding. Understanding actuarial and investment consulting a lot more.
Responsibilities
Yes a lot more responsibility than expected and other work placements I have done. You are involved in real client work and you can truly see how you are contributing to the wider projects being done on a daily basis.
Support & Guidance
Was given 3 mentors and supervisors who I am regularly in contact with and are extremely supporting and always make time to see me when I need it. Everyone else in the office is also extremely willing to take time to come and help you or even have a more informal chat.
Culture
Was very impressed by the work/life balance. Work is busy whilst you are in the office and you have to work hard, but work truly stops at 5:15 and there are opportunities for after work socials etc. Everyone is very friendly in the office, where most go to lunch at the same time and you can sit with everyone and anyone. Very good.
Your Impressions
Thoroughly enjoyed my placement. Could not have asked for more for an 8 week summer internship. Great exposure to different elements of work, real responsibility and a wonderful environment to work in.
Yes
Make sure you are enthusiastic and willing to throw yourself into the experience, as everyone else is!
