Overview
My role as an intern meant that I had a variety of work each day. This would often be helping the graduates in the team, helping with a current project or perhaps having coffee with one of the team. Tasks for projects included using PowerPoint and excel to format reports for clients. There were lots of networking opportunities so I attended drinks and socials with either other interns or the team I was working with. I was responsible for reaching out to members of the team for work and ensuring I asked for feedback.
Skills
Yes, most definitely. Throughout the internship we all complete a Certificate of Learning which entailed a 1 hr session and 4 hours of independent work per week for four weeks. This covered topics such as leadership, management, teamwork, communication and really highlighted important aspects in the workplace. This taught me about different culture in the workplace and how we all reach our full potential. Most importantly, my skills developed were through the internship itself. For instance, my organization was developed, confidence enhanced and I learnt new skills with excel and powerpoint.
Responsibilities
During the internship we were given responsibility to get work and then responsibility for completing it to a high standard, on time. Every intern has a buddy and counsellor to help them find work or answer any questions. An intern's work would be looked over and they would be given feedback. We had responsibility to complete our Certificate of Learning every Friday afternoon and attend all the sessions. As an intern you are encouraged to get involved and take responsibility for yourself but there is a large support system to help you do this.
Support & Guidance
As mentioned, there was a vast network of support available to me during my internship. My direct points of contact were my buddy (a younger member of the team that has a more informal relationship with me) and then my counsellor (a more senior team member that collates my feedback). Both my buddy and counsellor were great and so welcoming and helpful throughout my time at EY. We also had a call with someone in student recruitment half way through the internship to check up on how are getting on. Everyone was very welcoming, accommodating and were willing to help.
Culture
I was very impressed with the company culture at EY. There are lots of diversity initiatives and throughout the internship I worked with a team to fundraise for the EY foundation charity. There are lots of social events, whether formally or casually after work on a Thursday. There are EY sports that interns and employees can join regardless of ability. The general atmosphere is very friendly, professional and respectful. The company culture is very inclusive and I have felt very comfortable.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at EY. From the first day, which was an induction event, I have felt welcomed and valued. Meeting new people and learning about their career journeys was once aspect that I truly appreciated. The company culture, team and people made my experience at EY. They were knowledgeable, helpful and provided a rare insight into the work at EY. The work was sometimes enjoyable and sometimes not, and at points it was hard to find work as this internship took place over the quieter summer months. I had a great time and would definitely return and recommend.
Yes
My advice to others applying to EY would be apply as early as you can. I applied for the Women in Business spring week which was great fun and also enabled me to get fast tracked to a summer internship. Be confident when you apply as everyone is friendly and wants people with different skill sets. I have met people with different strengths and weaknesses so you don't need to be perfect to apply! The process to get to EY can be long but keep going. Even if you think you have done badly on one round, you could be wrong so continue to perform as best you can for the remaining parts of the assessment.
