Overview
It varies from team to team. A lot of the work takes place on excel, from explaining the work performed, to creating pivot tables to summarize the data that is available for a company, excel is where most of this takes place. Otherwise the work includes shadowing your seniors in client calls and team meeting to gain an understanding of the work that takes place in the particular engagement. Overall, the work is similar to what those in grad roles perform.
Skills
Before this role I would say I had a beginner level understanding of Excel, but each day working at this role I fell like I am improving my proficiency in Excel. This is an important skill to have, especially in assurance and audit where a lot of the work takes place on Excel. Moreover, I have also learned to improve in areas such as emotional intelligence and gained many leadership skills through EY certificate learning programme that every intern is able to take part in
Responsibilities
I was gradually exposed to more and more important roles throughout the internship. Initially for the week or so most of my tasks involved being trained in the skills necessary for me to apply myself in these scenarios. I received exposure to clients, and was given tasks that helped in the progress of the engagements that the teams were working on. I felt like my ideas were heard and the tasks I completed were meaningful.
Support & Guidance
Initially, I was given a lot of support and guidance and gradually this was reduced in order for me to be independent and be able to actually help without hindering others in their work. I always felt like I had someone to go to or contact if I didn't know what to do or if something happened. I was assigned a buddy that I could talk to and a counsellor who I could approach if I needed support.
Culture
The culture at EY is very inclusive. There are many different types of people from different backgrounds and I feel like this diversity allows for a diversity in views an opinions that helps when approaching any type of problem, having diversity allows for a new set of views that could help tackle different problems effectively. There were company-wide and engagement-wide social events and charity initiatives that took place in my time here. There also manyv opportunities to join sports events etc.
Your Impressions
I came into the internship with pretty low expectations and they were blown out of the water. I had talked to other people who had worked in other internships and had to work insanely long hours or they didn't get along with their teams but these weren't problems I experienced at EY. Everyone I met at EY were incredibly nice and caring and offered to help in any way they could, we weren't expected to work past 5/5:30 and so I was able to maintain a healthy work-life balance during this internship. Overall, it was a great experience and I was able to learn a lot during this internship.
Yes
In my case I put a lot of effort in to preparing for the interview and assessment centre and I would advice those applying to do the same. Prepare by researching EY and the projects they are currently working on in order to show interest in the company. Also, keep up with current events in order to be able to comment on social causes or the news in general if it comes up in the interview.
