Overview
Initially, I shadowed various members of the team and other departments, including energy and structures, which was really interesting and a great way to start my placement. I then was put on a major project happening in Manchester where I, using CAD, designed numerous manhole chambers, all with different challenges and complexities. Another project I helped with some foundation design calculating live and dead loads. I have also helped with utility mapping using CAD.
Skills
I had previously used CAD but my skill level has been taken to a new level, I had not worked at the level of detail required for the drainage details and it really pushed and challenged me. I have a much better understanding of how construction projects function having been part of the projects at Work Stage 1 to 7. I also was part of a site visit to see the work in 'real life'.
Responsibilities
Yes I was given full autonomy over the designs of the manhole chambers, I have really enjoyed the responsibility and to give my 'stamp' on a new project.
Support & Guidance
I was received as much as I asked for, I would keep going until I couldn't figure a problem out on my own and then I would seek help. Everyone is more than happy to help out but it is your responsibility to ask the question.
Culture
It's been the best work environment I have worked in. Friendly and extremely professional, I never felt not part of 'something' and it encouraged me to do the best I could. I never felt embarrassed for making a mistake and was encouraged to give it a go and if it doesn't work I will be able to figure out what went wrong with the help of the team.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was extremely challenging and at times I felt a lot of pressure to meet deadlines and the high standards of the team around me, but this only added the enjoyment and it gave an even better sense of achievement when I completed the work. The team were very hospitable and I've never not felt welcome. I will definitely do my best to come back here and work.
Yes
Be open and honest about who you are and why you want to work for Arup, the ethos here is progressive and to look to the future so take this approach in your application. I never achieved the best grades in the world but I had a story to tell about my life experiences, by showing you can give something different to Arup this will set you apart from the rest.
