Overview
My roles at EY varied daily. I was able to work on various task for different members of the Government and Transport sector. The work involved using Excel to analyse financial models and PowerPoint for business development proposals. Also, I was given the opportunity to sit in workshops and client meetings. Additionally, EY created an interactive platform, whereby interns were able to regularly sit in partner talks about their career journey, ask numerous questions and gain valuable insight into the world of finance and advice on how to achieve our goals in life.
Skills
My proficiency in both Excel and PowerPoint has greatly enhanced. Additionally, my socializing skills with clients, fellow interns and team members has developed. I have become more confident in presenting ideas and research to individuals but also have gained a proactive role in wanting to be involved in more projects and tasks, having the ability to contribute in any way possible. I have also gained greater attention to detail in how I present and research my findings.
Responsibilities
During my 5 week Internship EY gave me a lot of responsibility to find projects, which in turn gave me a lot freedom to speak to more individuals and learn about the different tasks being dealt with. Having the opportunity to receive client exposure, ensured that I held the responsibility of conducting myself in an appropriate manner whilst also furthering my knowledge on the topic at hand. I felt that the appropriate amount of duty was handed to me which furthered my skills in the work environment but also challenged me.
Support & Guidance
From the start, I felt very supported by EY. The student recruitment team were very organized in ensuring that every intern felt welcome and had the appropriate resources available to support their journey. I was given a buddy and a counsellor who were able to guide me whenever I was unsure of how to approach a task or when I felt overwhelmed by the workload. Additionally, the G&T team was always willing to answer any questions and explain, in-depth projects before resourcing assignments
Culture
The company culture was very inclusive and diverse, everyone in the team and the corporate finance sector as a whole were very accepting of the interns. They ensured that tasks were resourced and everyone has something to do which could contribute to our learning path meaningfully. Moreover, the general atmosphere was very calm, everyone is always hyper-focused on the projects they are working on, but when someone needs help, colleagues are more than willing to share guidance.
Your Impressions
I greatly enjoyed my internship. EY created a very interactive experience for me. Prior to the internship starting, check-ins were available, student recruitment were also on hand to ensure that everyone was comfortable and happy. The company culture was very inclusive, both inside the office and outside at work socials. Overall, the internship exceeded my expectations, purely because I was given a platform to explore the work I wanted to do, gain exposure to 'the world of finance' but also because it was collaborative journey with my team and with fellow interns.
Yes
I would explain the interview process to others applying, especially to learn and align yourselves with the EY core values and beliefs, because I have observed EY work around their beliefs, which acts as a foundation for their actions and pursuits. Regarding the assessment center, I would tell applicants to have courage in themselves and come across confident in the work you produce because EY has very high standards in all that they do. I was inspired to join EY because out of the Big 4, this company came across as the most inclusive and client orientated firm.
