Overview
In the Assurance internship, the role is to support the audit procedures for your team's client(s). This includes tasks like summarising reports and minutes, and updating documents to reflect the most recent financial year. When further information is needed, you may be required to request it from the client. You attend meetings on Teams and in-person, as EY has a hybrid working model, and may be asked to take the minutes of the meetings.
Skills
I have developed my skills in Excel a lot. Through the completion of the StudyFlex programme, we learned more about leadership. This includes lessons like how to lead a hybrid team, what skills are required to be a great leader and how to create a culture of coaching. Through doing self-reflection activities, we also learned about our existing strengths and weaknesses, and how to improve them. A key skill we developed is team working and communication and time management.
Responsibilities
At first, it felt as though the team were unsure as to what tasks I could help with and what I would be able to do. As time went on, and as I did more work for the team, I was trusted with more difficult activities. By the end of the five weeks, it felt as though I was given a lot of responsibility as my team trusted that I could do the work they needed.
Support & Guidance
I was given quite a lot of guidance in the internship. At the start, we were assigned a counsellor, who we would speak to about specific issues and our wellbeing, and a buddy, who would help us with general advice, like how to submit timesheets. The team was very supportive as well, and whenever I was given a task, it would be thoroughly explained, and I always felt able to ask all the questions needed.
Culture
The company culture and general atmosphere were really good. I felt like everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I didn't expect everyone to be so polite, especially working in finance, but the seniors were always friendly and willing to help. The office was modern and comfortable, so it was good to get the chance to go to the office and meet the team in real life. Working from home, it was harder to make a good impression, but in the office it was much better.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. I feel that I have made some really good friends, and I hope I can stay in touch with everyone. I learned so much about myself, too. I wish the internship had been for longer so I could spend more time with my team and the other interns. I hope to return to EY as a graduate since I have had such a great time here, with such a diverse range of people.
Yes
I would say definitely apply if you are unsure. The process may be a bit long, but it's worth it. Make sure to really research the different roles, so you are really sure that it's what you want to do. If you are made a graduate offer afterwards, it is for the same service line and location, so you need to keep that in mind when you apply. I recommend everyone applies as it's a great learning opportunity.
