    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I've been placed on a public sector project, my role focusing on the fulfilment of resourcing demands that involves onboarding and offboarding of resources. I work very closely with the finance team to ensure we're onboarding resources that align with our budget, and to eliminate risk as much as possible of overspending. I speak daily with the senior leadership team to implement change, and support with generic HR issues faced on the project

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Working for an IT company naturally encourages you to develop IT skills, therefore I've been able to develop strong excel skills due to using this software on a day-to-day basis. Working with a variety of stakeholders such as senior leaders and the external client has enabled me to become more confident, whilst increasing my communication skills as well. With IBM being a global company, I've also taken advantage of the many networking opportunities.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given masses of responsibility during my placement. I was solely responsible for the day-to-day resourcing actions and was essentially the "go to" when senior leadership had any resourcing queries. I've also been trusted with speaking to the external client, and submitting financial reports as well

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • There is always someone you can ask if you have any questions regarding your role. The handover period is vigorous, and you're assigned a task manager who oversees any actions you're struggling with. There was never a moment during my placement where I felt I was being a nuisance asking questions, as this is really encouraged at IBM.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • IBM is probably the most diverse and inclusive workforce I've ever worked for. The amount of work they put into making everyone feel equal is very impressive and wholesome. Despite working hard to satisfy the client's needs, IBM are also big on developing staff, whilst streamlining processes. From start to finish, I've found they're very interested in your out of work hobbies as well.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I've thoroughly enjoyed my placement with IBM. My team are very sociable, welcoming, and inspiring. The company values resonate a lot with me, and the work is very interesting. I've been able to develop a lot of skills during my placement year and established exactly what kind of career I'd like to pursue. I'm definitely looking to come back to IBM in future, and will be applying to the grad scheme

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
  • I would recommend anyone to research the company before applying. The application process is very competitive, but if you do your research, it will give you a head start. It's always good to have an idea what career you'd like to do, but IBM are always good in helpong you find this once you're successful anyway. The application process can also be quite long, so don't give up and remain determined.
