Overview
My role in the Learning Lab is to help organise events & activties, assist the head of the learning lab with operations, ensure we are targetting the correct cohort of people & assisting with teaching and prepping materials during our programmes.
Skills
I have learnt many skills, mostly adjusting to a corporate setting. I have improved hugely in my organisation, presentation skills and confidence in talking to senior people. I have worked out how to prioritise tasks in the best way to ensure maximum work is done
Responsibilities
I was given a fair amount of responsibility, but it grew as I went through the programme and improved on my skills.
Support & Guidance
I received a great amount of support and guidance from my manager during my placement as we worked closely together. He ensured that I was put into situations to help me improve my confidence and hard skills and I have seen a huge difference in myself as a result
Culture
The company culture is one of my favourite parts of the placement. The general atmosphere is so warm, inclusive and welcoming, with so many events to take part in to meet people from different departments.
Your Impressions
It took me a while to feel confident enough to teach topics to students that I wasn't as sure on myself, but apart from that, I have loved my placement. We have a wonderful and kind team, and myself and others are astonished at how well we are treated at Vertex, so many freebies! It exceeded my expectations.
Yes
Have a general understanding of social justice and the education landscape Be open to learning about the corporate environment and process: it's okay to not know things! Try and talk to as many people as you can if you get the job This probably isn't the job for you if you want to become a researcher: don't expect huge amounts of technical science. It is more about STEM education, communication, social justice.
