Overview
In my role I was exposed and given the opportunity to actively contribute to various projects that my team was working on. I was given tasks to complete from the beginning, with the full support of my team and additional educational resources. I was also invited to attend several meetings which helped me to better understand the business. In addition I was encouraged to engage with other teams to further expand my knowledge.
Skills
I have developed various skills during my time at HSBC. Time management and being able to prioritise tasks are essential as I was working on multiple projects at the same time. HSBC highly encourages networking which is an often underestimated skill. We were also provided with a wide range of training courses and development sessions which were covering multiple areas of the bank. Professional development is very well supported.
Responsibilities
I had the opportunity to lead and manage my own projects. My manager and team members were always available to support me but I was responsible to deliver my work in a timely manner and of the expected standards. All the projects assigned to me were designed to provide tangible help to the team and again, it was my responsibility to produce quality work that could be incorporated in the wider team.
Support & Guidance
There was plenty of support available. My line manager was always available to help and guide me, as well as the wider team. I was also able to connect with other teams in the organisation and they were always happy to support me. I was allocated a mentor and this was particularly beneficial to guide me through all the other elements that were not strictly related to the team work.
Culture
There were several events organised by the company to give us the opportunity to get to know each other better. HSBC very much values diversity and inclusion, there are many programs designed to develop awareness of cultural differences and all employees are highly encouraged to join them. Sustainability is another core value of the company and HSBC incorporates it in every business practice. Also you have many opportunities to volunteer and this is highly appreciated.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship. I had the opportunity to explore many areas of the company and I was encouraged to spend some time with other teams if I wished to do so. This experience helped me a lot to develop new skills and to have a real exposure to the banking sector. HSBC very much values the employees wellbeing and there are many initiatives to support the work-life balance.
Yes
The interview process is quite smooth. It is similar to other companies where you have to pass a few assessments, but they are mainly about your personality rather then industry knowledge. For the final interview, it is important to have a general awareness of what HSBC does and what are its values and strategy. This information is easily accessible on the company's website.
