Overview
Complete projects assigned to me, for example coding or CAD modelling, doing training courses on the various in-house software and engineering ethics/best practices, attend meetings in the group.
Skills
Learnt how to model creep in concrete using numeric methods, different construction codes, using in-house Arup CAD modelling software.
Responsibilities
Somewhat. Whilst I had a fair amount of training given, I also helped out on various projects that are part of important work that Arup were doing, for example helping out on tender documents, cross-checking CAD model materials and internal databases to help Arup identify structural issues.
Support & Guidance
A lot. Grad engineers were super helpful and the senior engineer I was with was very helpful in trying to explain the obstacles I ran into. The Arup University moodle courses have a wealth of information on every sector of engineering, sustainability and business, and beyond.
Culture
Engineers around were incredibly hard-working and 'switched-on', much more so compared to other peers' internship companies. Everyone was friendly and helpful and welcoming.
Your Impressions
To a large extend. I had real-life responsibilities that I can use and extend my engineering knowledge, and do things outside engineering that meant I can learn about how the company operated, what other teams are doing etc
Yes
Definately take up most opportunities you are given and ask people for different work as Arup has a diverse portfolio. Take up the learning opportunities.
