Overview
I help to complete some of the work of consultants across their projects. On a day-to-day basis, this might result in me creating equality and environmental impact assessment, benchmarking economic approaches or looking at policies across countries. I'll regularly attend project meetings to get a greater insight into what is going on and to meet other people. I also collaborate with some of the other interns on joint research projects.
Skills
I will be developing my GIS skills which I only previously touched upon minimally, but by being involved in some in-depth projects, I get to work at a level which I haven't done before. By being involved in projects at a practical level with people with varying experience, I have developed my interpersonal skills. I have learnt how to produce socio-economic reports.
Responsibilities
I have been involved in a wide range of projects at a good level. I was tasked with producing reports by myself which gave me a sense of accomplishment. Many senior colleagues treated me with the same regard they would for someone who was a proper employee at their firm which I have highly appreciated as this has resulted in a great exposure to different lines of business and my own autonomy with research projects.
Support & Guidance
Employees within the team have been very friendly and supportive when I need help, or when I want to get involved in a certain type of project. I have been assured that I can contact anyone within the wider team when I need anything, and I feel confident that I can do so.
Culture
There is a very relaxed and uncompetitive company culture which is very comforting. Everyone is happy to help each other whenever. There is however, a lack of engagement between teams, which can make the office seem quite quiet on days members from your team aren't there. The office isn't always busy, but this is also because the company is very flexible with how people work post-covid.
Your Impressions
Though I haven't finished my internship yet, it has been a very enjoyable experience so far. With there being fewer interns compared to other firms, it allows for greater attention which has made me feel more involved. I have been able to work on a range of projects because the team has been very accommodating. As an improvement, I would like it if there were more social activities/events I could get involved in.
Yes
I would suggest that people research the lines of work within the sector they are applying to and carefully evaluate how their experiences match up to what the company is doing, or why they are interested in learning more about particular areas they may not have ad exposure to beforehand. Practice cover letter writing skills and interview skills to show off the best version of yourself.
