Overview
Primarily my role was to develop a front-end UX/UI project for an internal Amex application. Day-to-day tasks include attending meetings (such as stand-ups, product refinements, sprint reviews), writing code, and preparing presentations/pitches.
Skills
Improved skills: React.js, reading others' code, version control using Github, using bash terminal, delivering corporate presentations, delivering and receiving feedback New skills: Working in a corporate environment, contributing to large codebases, networking and communication skills
Responsibilities
Our team of interns was given full ownership of our project and executive control over most decisions. We were given wireframes to code from, though were also free to make changes with creative liberty. Our project was isolated from American Express' wider repos though is intended to be integrated with a larger project.
Support & Guidance
It was often difficult to get in contact with more senior engineers when we needed guidance though were always very accommodating with their time when they were available. When we had support, colleagues were always very helpful, in-depth, and answered all questions. Outside of our project, the support network was amazing. Our line manager, project manager, and graduate buddies were always available to answer questions and organise time with appropriate colleagues if we were struggling to find support.
Culture
Intern social events were frequent and included events at bars, volleyball, picnics, etc. Company wide events were less common but included drinks at a local and a day out of work for team building activities. The company atmosphere was very friendly and has a big focus on inclusivity and diversity. Diversity initiatives include Amex's colleague networks, such as Women in Tech, Pride+ (LGBTQ+), and the Black Engagement Network, all of which host their own social events and offer opportunities for voluntary and community projects outside of work.
Your Impressions
The role exceeded my expectations by giving us the opportunity to try all aspects of software engineering as well as improving the skills we specified in our application. The development of technical skills was secondary to improving our soft skills however. The company culture was the most enjoyable aspect of the internship and would encourage me to go back to Amex, particularly given the flexibility of the company with regards to work-life balance and lateral moves within the company.
Yes
American Express value soft skills more than technical ability - their most important values are their Blue Box Values which would be useful to know before the interview process. They have an extremely flexible work culture when it comes to hours and office location and give interns a lot of independence with their projects. While joining trying to understand the hierarchy, acronyms, and departmental structure seems overwhelming and vast at first, employees who have been there for years still aren't expecting to know everything!
