Overview
Stand-up with members of the team, software development, discussion with team members, working on assigned tasks on a project
Skills
Yes, learnt technical skills with an API and also things like prefect and GRPC. Developed interpersonal skills on things like presenting.
Responsibilities
I was given a good amount of responsibility. I wasn't overwhelmed but I got to complete a project that I can talk about in future opportunities, that helped develop my skills. The team was very good at making sure that I was comfortable and wasn't out of my depth and were extremely helpful
Support & Guidance
They had a good mix of self-driven development and independence, but also checked-in regularly and offered lots of judgement-free help when required. I found that everyone was very happy to assist and were very friendly. There were also opportunities to do training on a 3rd party learning site, which proved useful.
Culture
I found it was really friendly and welcoming. Everyone is non-judgmental and seem to care about you doing well. They have a lot of activities like rock-climbing and badminton so you can meet people and be active outside of work, or improve skills such as in public speaking club. They also have Thursday drinks which is great for networking, and it seems anyone can speak to anyone without worrying about title.
Your Impressions
I found it really enjoyable! I got a decent amount of responsibility and saw my tiny project start to finish, but it was hard enough that I felt challenged and that I developed new skills in the process. Everyone was super friendly and I felt welcomed and encouraged.
Yes
Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it, but be a self-starter and try and find your own answers first as it shows you are independent. Be patient with the onboarding for tech, as it takes times for all the individual access requests to be approved, during this time focus on looking at the courses offered and making the most of training and learning from your colleagues.
