    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role was in the Process Control and Automation department, where I would work on monitoring solutions using a new technology for site, LoRaWAN. This entails, finding out what can be monitored, how to monitor it, test the solutions and then rollout solutions into the plant areas

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learned many skills in my time here, including PLC Programming, network interfacing and researching skills. I have also massively improved my presentation skills and confidence, which has helped me to work better in teams and to get my point across

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • After I settled in to the industry, I started working with another Engineer on a monitoring solution that worked on the network protocol LoRaWAN. On the Port Talbot site, we were the only 2 people to be working on it, which was quite a responsibility.

  • I had loads of support and guidance, I had up to daily chats with my mentor as well as weekly meetings, and a monthly 1 to 1/performance review

  • Pretty good, although there are many massive moving parts, so sometimes it can take some time to get things rolling

  • I very much enjoyed my placement, I was put into a department which aligns with my interests which has helped in both my knowledge and enjoyment

  • It is a very big company with a lot of opportunities, moving internally seems easy enough if you fancied it. And with the wide range of plant areas, there is bound to be something that interests you
