Overview
Daily, I attend stand ups with my team to give updates on what I'm doing and addressing any blockers. I interact with my task manager and also external clients in workshops and playbacks. I've been responsible for scrum mastering projects, documenting the outputs from design-thinking workshops. I've been involved in about 5 projects within my year improving systems for the client. I have also volunteered at IBM (LGBTQ+ community, Q&As ect)
Skills
Yes. Through formal IBM online courses and through talking to other people in the company and also doing my role I have learnt many new skills. I have an understanding of the design thinking approach to problem solving and I have also had experince of working in an agile manner. I have got used to using software that I hadn't heard of before my placement such as trello, mural and webex.
Responsibilities
I was responsible for the slides I created to present back. I was also responsible for hosting stand up meetings and for the communication put out in my volunteering. The responsibility given to you is dependent on how much you're comfortable being responsible for although you are encouraged to push yourself out of your comfort zone. You're treated as equal with experinced employees and are given responsibility that suits your role.
Support & Guidance
I got support from both my managers (foundation manager and task manager) in meetings that I would set up regularly. I also got support from other people in my team and other IBMers that I would talk with. This includes mentors that you can find to help you with your everyday work and help with future career aspirations you might have.
Culture
There has been a few big intern socials but also its likely that there will be smaller informal events set up by interns to meet casually after work. There are also online events that you can be part of to meet and socialise with IBMers worldwide. There are foundation communitites for minority groups where you can meet informally, have safe spaces and talk. The CSR team hold events to get involved with as well.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the fact that there was so much to learn and so many different skills you could gain. I enjoyed the environment at IBM and the opportunities it provides so I am coming back this year to do a degree apprenticeship for the next 3 years.
Yes
To be curious and to find somethings that interest you about the company that you can further explore while you're here. The interviews are more like a conversation to get to know you so prepare but bring your personality to it. I would also say to get stuck in right at the begginning. you don't have to wait to know loads before you do things, you learn as you go!
