Overview
I was involved in supporting various GSK projects, completing sample prep. and analysis using HPLC-MS/MS. This allowed analytes to be quantified in matrices like blood, plasma and urine. I worked alongside the bioanalysis team on a daily basis, and as the placement progressed, I was given more opportunities to complete assays independently. I also undertook a project, which helped to support the department.
Skills
I developed a strong industry knowledge and understanding, achieving this through interactions within the department, but also through attending internal seminars. My lab. skills improved dramatically, as I was quickly trained and became independent in the use of HPLC-MS/MS, aswell as different automation tools (liquid dispensing). The fast-paced environment of DMPK bioanalysis helped to develop my adaptability, whilst also continuing to develop my organisational skills. My teamworking and confidence have also improved.
Responsibilities
After a short training period (1-2months), I gradually gained more independence and responsibility within the department. This meant I was completing assays independently, aswell as working on my project with minimal supervision. The placement students were valued members of the department, and our work and contributions were greatly appreciated. Although I became autonomous in the ways of working, team members within the department were always available to provide support, aswell as to answer questions.
Support & Guidance
My supervisors were excellent, and I developed strong, long-lasting relationships with them, built through open communication and interaction on a daily basis. The DMPK bioanalysis team, and the wider DMPK organisation were friendly, engaging and I was made to feel at ease and a real member of the team. The team were always willing to provide support, aswell as answering the multitude of questions I often had.
Culture
GSK offered a good variety of events and activities, which were usually well advertised through e-mail communications. Within the department, there was some social interactions outside hours, including a Christmas Meal, though tea breaks during working hours also occurred frequently. The IP community was very strong, with various different activities arranged by a committee created at the beginning of the placement.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement within DMPK bioanalysis, and strongly feel that the people I worked alongside helped to enrich my experience, whilst also allowing me to develop as an individual, with both my transferrable skills and lab./industry knowledge. GSK was a good company to complete my placement with, and there seems to be various opportunities available. I did feel overworked at times, but the experience and connections I have built made it worthwhile.
Yes
Although apprehensive prior to beginning my placement, I was immediately put at ease, and did not feel out of my depth as all required training was provided on-the-job. I feel that I have made a positive contribution to research and development during my placement, which is what I set out to do when applying. I think it is important to do your research prior to applying, as that helped to prepare me for interview.
