    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • The online insight was 5 days long. We were given an insight into the four different streams of accountancy that BDO offers - Audit, Business and Service Outsourcing, Advisory and Tax. They had speakers and graduated from each stream talk about their experience in the company. The insight also included some workshops such as a strength and weaknesses workshop where we learnt about how we can improve on our areas of development. We were also given time to network with each other and ask questions to employees and graduates.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I developed my communication skills by picking up on what questions the other people on the insight week asked. I had struggled to come up with questions to ask, but by the end of the week, I now have a bank of interesting questions that I can ask next time. I also developed communication through the group project as I had to communicate with my group. I also learnt how to identify my areas of development and how to improve on them to make them into strengths.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • It was really interesting and insightful learning about the business because before the week, I didn’t know much about accountancy or all the different streams that BDO offers but now I know a bit more about each stream thanks to the speakers talking about their roles and what is expected of them. Learning about the roles available was also insightful as it allowed me to think about what I could see myself doing and what role I could pursue after I graduate.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture seemed really open and friendly. BDO is all about “being yourself” which is good as it means I don’t have to try and mould myself into something I’m not. They’re also really inclusive and have specific diversity goals that they wish to achieve. The atmosphere seemed really relaxed. Employees aren’t expected to work overtime like some other firms and there’s a good work/life balance which is quite important to me.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the insight. They even gave us a BDO branded hoodie, water bottle, notebook, and pen before the insight week started which gave off the impression that they care about us. I liked learning and hearing about the different streams and it got me thinking about which stream I would be most interested in being a part of. I think it was a good use of my time and they made it interactive and even had a quiz at the end which made it more interesting

  • 7. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO
  • I would say be yourself! BDO advocated for people being themselves so when you apply, just be your true and authentic self. They value integrity and honesty so don’t lie on your application! I would also say don’t stress about it. The company seems quite relaxed so if you get into the company then that’s very great but if you don’t then there’s always next time! Lastly, make sure to identify your areas of development so you can start developing them to make you a stronger candidate.
