The Role
I believe the placement was a very accurate experience of working in a real life work setting which cannot be experienced within a University course. The placement offered you an appropriate amount of responsibility, which I didn't expect with a placement year.
I never did feel left out with colleagues within the department, or looked down on by the company as a whole. I was given the same responsibility as other colleagues, regardless of being a placement student.
I was given support and guidence, and able to go to my superviser at any time to talk about any problems within my role or outside of my work life.
I was given a lot of responsibility, and this in turn made me very busy. This was mainly when there was move around in the department, or when various colleagues were absent.
I believe to start off with I wasn't given as much responsibility compared to what I ended up having near the end of my placement. Thas shown my capability to work under pressure and shown that I can prove myself to be a hard working team member.
I believe the skills I have learnt over the year, will benefit me incredibly. Especially, the Oracle system, which is used daily within the work role given. Presentation skills, computing skills and more importantly communication skills, which was required within my job role. These will help me towards my studies at University but also towards my future career.
The Company
The atmosphere I believe in the department was average, there was a friendly environment at all times, regardless of what was happening at the time. But it was never a work place that was hectic and people never got work done, people were relaxed but very much did their work also.
This was organised as the company has taken on Placement students in the past.
There are alot of training sessions set up, to learn new skills, and develop. You also develop within the department due to the many opportunities given to you.

The department which I did experience my placement role within, was a good department to be in. There are many opportunities to work there.
The Culture
To start the year, the social scene with all the students was very much alive, and there was more of a community sense. However over the year, this did decrease, when people made their own friends, or some didn't feel the need to go out. However this didn't decrease all together, and I still continue to go out most weekends with fellow students, graduates and collegues.
The cost of living in Darlington is quite cheap, and the cost of socialising as well is quite cheap.
The nightlife I would say in Darlington is quite poor, but this didn't stop me from going out with fellow students and having fun. However, there is Newcastle which has good nightlife, which is further away.
I didn't get involved in many activites outside of work, but I do know there are a lot of activities you can get involved in with the company, for example a football team and Cricket team. This as well as many charity events.
