Overview
As an Intern I was responsible for tasks that an Analyst would normally undertake within my team. It involved creating pitch books and slides for internal and external use, drafting papers and completing research on specific sectors. Additionally, the internship included a project which interns were expected to work on throughout the internship, which had to be presented in the penultimate week. This project forms part of the interns' assessment when it comes to internship conversion to FT roles.
Skills
I have used and expanded on the financial skills gained from previous internships and education. I was able to improve on my communication and analytical skills. The HR team arranged for a week-long classroom training with Financial Edge which covered very basic accounting and finance skills, primarily for people with no finance background.
Responsibilities
I was given quite a bit of responsibility during my time at Nomura. The level and variety of work that I received was very much what I expected, especially when considering that this was a summer internship and the markets are not typically very active during this time / people are on holiday.
Support & Guidance
I received support from my fellow interns and my team. I was assigned a buddy and a mentor who were able to offer feedback and advice throughout the internship.
Culture
Nomura has a great culture because of its smaller size compared to other banks. Additionally, the Japanese culture of the bank is a key differentiator.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship as I was able to learn and progress a lot in the space of eight weeks (excluding the training week). The company is very small compared to other bigger banks and the exposure you get to different teams is unparalleled.
Yes
Understand the culture of the bank and its key differences compared to some of the bigger banks that are out there. Network with people who work at Nomura already and have a good idea of which team you would like to join if you are applying for internship / analyst roles. Have a good understanding of different teams and structures that are in place within the bank.
