Overview
I would manage the reception at the Health Club which is shared by both hotel guests and the local community. This involved taking booking, checking guests in and out, providing towels, cleaning the changing rooms, ensuring that the facilities were in good condition. Overall it was hard work but the job is also also enjoyable as it enables me to do something I am passionate about - which is to provide good service for guests and others.
Skills
I have learnt a lot about how to interact with others, especially people I do not know, and to make guests feel welcome. This is important because it will help me in other jobs as well. I have learnt how to manage my time effectively and to get all tasks done on time. Also, I have learnt how to perform checks on equipment and facilities, which is good for my understanding of basic maintenance jobs.
Responsibilities
I was given a lot of responsibility. Often I would be working with just one or two other receptionists in the hotel health club, so this required me to take a lot of responsibility. There were many aspects of the job which could well be full time jobs themselves and indeed often are, such as cleaning and maintenance of the facilities. This was beneficial for me because it demonstrated that I can take on many tasks at once.
Support & Guidance
I was given a lot of guidance, especially at the beginning because I had not previously done any other jobs. This was necessary because it included things such as health and safety, which are fundamental to the hospitality industry. There was a lot of guidance from my colleagues on the job for things such as how to communicate with guests. I was able to learn from my colleagues on how to create a nice working environment.
Culture
The company culture is great - within the hotel health club we have a lot of interaction with each other inside and out of work, including an instagram page. This is because hospitality is supposed to be a social industry. There is a need for staff to be positive and ambitious, and this creates an environment where all staff support each other. The atmosphere was therefore great and we enjoyed each other's company working on the job.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed my year working at Hilton. It has given me the skills necessary for a career in hospitality but also elsewhere. My colleagues were great to work with and guests have generally been great to work for as well. There have been times where the job has been stressful as I have had to manage many priorities at once, but these have been manageable with a lot of support from my colleagues.
Yes
Think positively about what the role can do for your career prospects. A job in hospitality gives training for a lot of important things, including customer service, how to be approachable, and how to communicate with others. You will therefore need to show that you already have some of these qualities when you apply. Try and emphasize how you have researched how Hilton is different from other major hospitality companies, mainly in its global outlook.
