Overview
The role involved working in a team with other interns on real software engineering projects supported by a group of senior and junior engineers for 10 weeks. For the first 5 weeks we had to create a prototype of the project in order to learn the tech stack and then apply the skills to production code working on the real project.
Skills
I build upon knowledge i already had from university regarding the technologies used, but in addition to that I understood how a big corporation like American Express works internally. I had all my questions answered no matter the subject and all the employees were supportive of our efforts, encouraging us to network and socialise alongside the work that we were given.
Responsibilities
Yes I was. During the final 5 weeks of the internship we were given the chance to work on actual production code and had the authority to deploy that code into production. The project we were working on was also in the top 50 most important projects at the company.
Support & Guidance
A significant amount. The engineers that were overseeing us were very supportive and always ready to answer any questions that we had. They also received feedback very well by reacting quickly and responding to our requests whenever we had some.
Culture
The work-life balance was perfect. It was very refreshing to see a company that doesn't overwhelm its employees with work and expectations without thinking about their wellbeing. The offices were very comfortable and there were many events and places where you could socialise with the other interns or with other employees of AMEX. Overall very satisfied on that aspect.
Your Impressions
For me it was pleasure working for AMEX during those 10 weeks. It definitely went above any of my initial expectations of how this internship might go and I am glad I took the opportunity to work for them during the summer. I got some great advice and gained some valuable experience not only on the tech side but also working for a large company like AMEX.
Yes
Be confident, express your opinion and don't shy away from asking questions regardless of whether you think they are meaningless, every question matters and the people working at AMEX know that and will definitely answer it without any judgement of you. Network and socialise as much as you can since you are given countless of opportunities to do throughout the 10 weeks. Be proactive instead of reactive and take responsibility to improve what they have already assigned you. That is very much valued by AMEX.
