Overview
The role was to research different stocks within a specific sector in order to gauge which ones were the best opportunities and then pitch 2 companies to the whole team at the end of the internship. This included setting up and chairing calls with the companies, financial modelling, and attending stock pitches from full time analysts.
Skills
Yes. Financial modelling. Professional communication with clients and investor relations. Improved presentation and persuasive skills in the final pitch. Developed a deeper understanding of financial markets and the macro view of the world currently.
Responsibilities
Yes, lots! We were given responsibility to set up our own calls with investor relations of each company and to chair these meetings. I even got the chance to speak one-on-one with CFOs and CEOs of the companies I was researching. It is quite an independent role so we had responsibility of organizing our day-to-day work too.
Support & Guidance
The full time job is very independent so we were encouraged to be as independent as possible in the internship. Guidance was provided when needed; I was given a supervisor as well as my direct line manager to make sure I was well supported without being 'spoon fed'.
Culture
Very collaborative and has a flat hierarchy. I was encouraged to talk with portfolio managers and other teams that interested me too, who were all happy to speak with me and I was able to shadow roles I was interested in, in addition to my day job.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the internship. While it was quite challenging, it was always interesting and I was able to have independence and flexibility in my work to feed my curiosity where possible.
Yes
Be yourself throughout the process. They are looking for good fit in terms of both quantitative and qualitative attributes.
