Overview
I have mostly been focusing on implementing a piece of internal software to automate the data validation and aggregation stages in a reserve review. This involved some simple coding, and a strong focus on problem solving. Other smaller tasks have included researching IFRS 17, and completing tech reviews.
Skills
Problem solving: implementing software on a project has helped develop my problem solving and logical thinking by forcing me to find the most efficient way of completing the task Communication: I have needed to speak to a variety of people, which has helped me communicate more effectively as well as improve my confidence and networking ability
Responsibilities
In most of the work I was doing, I was given a great deal of independence and responsibility, while also having support when I needed it
Support & Guidance
I received a fair amount of support, but had access to lots more if I required it. There were daily catch-ups scheduled if I needed to discuss anything with my manager, friendly and helpful colleagues that would always be willing to answer any questions I had and project team members regularly checked to see how I was getting on
Culture
The culture and atmosphere was very pleasant, and there was no division between those who are more senior and those who are more junior. The atmosphere was quite informal. Everyone was friendly and the interns were encouraged to come to social events
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed the internship. The work I was doing was mostly interesting and quite varied so I was never bored. I felt as though the work I was doing was bringing value which was very rewarding. Aside from the work, I enjoyed being around the rest of the team both in the office and at social events
