    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Carrying out analytical skills when performing daily tasks, usually involving excel or other internal modelling software. Checking over spreadsheets for errors or inconsistencies and then doing technical reviews of presentations that includes the spreadsheet data. All work I do is then reported back to my project leader as I await the next tasks. Emails and meetings also take up significant time as they involve setting up plans for the following weeks to come.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have really developed my Excel and PowerBI knowledge by improving, and in some cases learning about data manipulation, data presentation and analysis of large data sets. Similarly, increased exposure to PowerPoint and Word due to review work has improved my overall technological skill set. The internal training sessions have provided me with a foundation to build off when using market leading software.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given numerous tasks that I undertook independently, however, all work I completed was checked over by colleagues with more experience to ensure no mistakes were made. I was often responsible for emailing internal teams to set up meetings and receive data for the projects. There were internal tasks set for interns as well when business/project work wasn't as busy.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Regular meetings were arranged with my internal support team. This included weekly buddy meetings as well as slightly less regular line manager meetings. An interns catch up meeting was also held every week as an opportunity for interns to speak openly about any issues. Everyone I spoke to was approachable and willing to help me with my tasks. Overall a fantastic support system without being overly intrusive of your work.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The working environment and atmosphere has the perfect balance between independent work, teamwork and supporting teams. This allowed me to work consistently in a way where I was extremely productive yet never felt overly pressured to complete a task. There is a sense of honesty around everyone's work as people provide regular updates on their progress. Furthermore, outside of the working environment there was a fantastic social setting, tailored to all.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed every day of my internship as there was so much variation and exposure to all kinds of actuarial work. This meant I was able to interact with multiple different colleagues with slightly different technical backgrounds. I was expecting a large corporate environment with pressured and stressed working but instead there is a friendly culture that exceeded expectations. It really is a place where everyone would feel welcome.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to WTW
  • I would say that whilst the hiring process is rather tough and can be quite a substantial time commitment, it is 100% worth it. The people you meet and the exposure to the insurance consulting industry is fantastic. Come in with an open mind but with a slight pre existing knowledge of insurance as it will help you to achieve the most out of the internship.
