Overview
Day to day work included conducting research into the project at hand by setting up meetings/contacting people in the team or reading and understanding documents on the project. Once research was completed work was completed in a team of engineering interns to analyze findings and present these in various ways to managers within the teams.
Skills
I have learnt how to apply engineering theories learnt at uni on a real world project. I gained an understanding of the limitations that come with working on non theoretical applications while also developing presentation, report writing, business communications skills as well as increasing my understanding on the workings and the future of the energy and utilities industries.
Responsibilities
I was given plenty of responsibility, the task was looking into a project which was highlighted as a possibility for being implemented by the company in the future so naturally it was important that the project findings were correct. Responsibility was also given in other ways such as through an initiative to raise awareness for a charity and the running of fundraising events for this.
Support & Guidance
A line manager and buddy was assigned to me to provide support which was super helpful, also everyone else I spoke to was very happy to have a chat and help out if the could in anyway.
Culture
The company culture was very welcoming and caring. This was shown through the setup of the charity challenge that was set up alongside my placement which was also great for getting to know other interns and making new friends.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my time at the placement, there was never I time where I was left twiddling my thumbs as there was always something going on to be engaged with.
Yes
Do your research into the company and it's core values. Not many people know who Centrica are or what they do when they apply there so don't let this put you off as you are in the same situation as the majority of others applying.
