The Role
There were times when I realy enjoyed the placement and times when I really didnt. At AW they split your placement into at least two 6 month placements (sometimes you can do up to 4 3 month placements) This is good as it gives you a well rounded view of the company. However it really depends on the department your in as some are committed to developing the undergraduates and some are not. I've come away with a lot of new skills and great experience, but I could have enjoyed my time a lot more.
Again its quite luck of the draw depending on where you are. And with such a big company you get all sorts of people. The people you work with day in day out make a huge difference. They are generally good people, but as in all walks of life there will be people you dont get on with.
Not meaning to sound repetative but it depends on where you get placed. The undergraduate scheme is run by the training department and then sent out to various departments, but there isnt much communication or integration between the two. In some deparmtents you will have a manager who will discuss objectives and try to ensure you compolete them, in others they wont.
There is always work for you to do, and you can always ask for more.
Again it depends on the department. In my first they kept moving me between teams to help give me an overview of the company, which was good, but it meant I didnt have as much responsibility, in the second I was given plenty.
Im just going back to my final year, but i believe the skills/experience will be invaluable.
The Company
The offices change depending on where you are. I was in one which was shared with the MOD (who was teh customer) so it always had to be very professional. However it was still fun and relaxed.
AS mentioned the placement could benefit from more integration betwenn training and the department. Clearly set out SMART obejectives which are frequantly revisted would be usefull. But overall it was OK, just some small improvements would have made it much better.
We had a usefull and fun all day course, the salary is good, whenever you ask for it there is help at hand. However a more proactive approach on the companies part would have been good, sometimes it is up to you to go to managers and ask for help in your development.

You can apply for the grad scheme, although there is no guarantee.
The Culture
Our year had a good year where there were frequently organised undergraduate social nights(Amonst the undergraduates) and teh company has a student and apprentice society which organise regular events.
Very cheap area.
Not much going on - 1 club. But it is what you make it, everyone always had a good time.
Allways events like paintballing, bowling etc
