    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Marketing Intern. Thrown straight in to the deep end with two primary tasks to complete by the end of the 10 weeks, alongside other smaller objectives. Day-to-day involves attending meetings, setting up and conducting interviews with internal stakeholders, working with team members to use existing marketing tools to complete one of my tasks. Also learn something new about the company every day - whether formally through an intern learning event or informally through discussing the company with the team.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes. Teamwork/Asking for help - developed further teamwork skills through having a line manager and buddy, an immediate team, a wider team, and a business area team. Having these different levels has made teamwork interesting as it gives several options for who to go to for assistance, all of which are happy to help. Makes asking for help much easier - not always bothering the same person, and mostly have experts to go to within the team. Communication - being able to professionally chase people up on commitments, via email, putting a reminder in their diary or creating a meeting in the diary for them to attend. Many more...

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. The primary tasks that I were given were substantive and have an actual impact on the business - they were not "intern" tasks. During these tasks, I was trusted to do it alone and ask for or seek assistance if I deemed it necessary - only had weekly compulsory checkups. Further, I was given the opportunity to represent the business during Farnborough International Airshow 2022, being trusted to talk to industry CEOs and senior executives regularly whilst representing the business.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • It is always available if you seek it, for anything. Internship specific support - can go to your line manager, buddy or the internship coordinator. They are all available and happy to help. IT support - just ring the number and they are always there to help. Misc/Business support - there is a ticket system on the R-R internal website where you can get support quickly by opening a ticket. I did this as my tax code was incorrect and it was fixed within a few days.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Incredible - you are trusted to get on with your work and do it to a sufficient standard. They don't count how many hours you do, you aren't forced to come in to work on certain days (hybrid), you can take extended lunches and breaks during the day to do important tasks (e.g., a school run). Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. A lot of company events and activities, including sports grounds, awards ceremonies, and social groups, including a language cafĂ©. Very diverse place to work, people from all countries, cultures, ethnicities and religions provide a great working environment. On-site restaurant and cafe, as well as outside garden/seating area.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Work - interesting and challenging work. When it comes together I get a sense of joy as I can see that what I have done will actually amount to something that impacts the business. Team - couldn't have asked for a better team. Incredibly intelligent and friendly people, from my immediate team to my wider team. Culture was much more relaxed, diverse and friendly that anticipated when first stepping in to the "corporate" world. I will undoubtedly be taking the graduate scheme if it is offered to me.

  • 7. Would you recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce
  • The application process is difficult. Be prepared to be asked anything and everything, learn as much about the company as possible (especially its values as questions will pander to this) and ensure you study for the psychometric tests. The assessment centre is also difficult but fun - so enjoy it. Ensure you are able to fully justify any answers you give and have a strong method of working, and let this method be known (structure your answers). Ensure you know that R-R is an engine manufacturing company - not a car manufacturing company!!!
