Overview
Working on a full-stack web app project in a group of 6 interns with a React + Node/Express stack, linking it to the data provided by other backend applications that are already maintained by the wider team we are associated with. Meeting with higher ups in the team and people who use our app to demo it to them and get feedback.
Skills
I learnt something new with pretty much every framework/technology I worked with - React, Express, Java Spring, Figma, CSS.
Responsibilities
We had a lot of creative freedom over our application and treated as if we were the product owners of the app. We of course had to work towards the business requirements that were given to us, but the implementation details were left open-ended for us to explore.
Support & Guidance
I had lots of guidance from my managers, who were always there to help or direct us to someone who could help us, as well as the freedom to use resources to learn new skills relevant to my project.
Culture
General atmosphere was friendly, although the team was very big so I did not know many employees outside of the ones I interacted with daily.
Your Impressions
This was a great first internship for me, not only for the skills I've learned on the job but also the close-knit intern community where I made lots of friends. I really enjoyed the experience.
Yes
Know software engineering concepts well (OOP, testing concepts, data structures). They also have various pre-internship opportunities like spring weeks and hackathons that can give you a small glimpse into how it's like to work here, and potentially the chance to fast track to an internship.
