Overview
As a summer intern on the GBP Rates Trading desk, I learned about swaps, UK Gilts and inflation-linked products. I prepared the morning briefs for my team, which helped me understand what are the main drivers of the market. As part of the rates desk, I prepared weekly trade ideas that needed to be presented to fellow interns and other rate traders. This process was helpful to put all the theoretical knowledge I gained by shadowing my team into practice. I also worked on a longer-term project that included a historical analysis and potential trade idea generation.
Skills
I did not know much about rates products, so the internship was a very steep learning curve for me. Besides the technical knowledge, I also developed interpersonal skills, such as accurate communication and confident presentation skills. This role also required me to develop attention to detail and a general commercial awareness around current, past and future market conditions.
Responsibilities
Yes. I not only was allowed to follow any analysis considered to be fit for my project, I also needed to express positions in UK Gilt futures on which I kept a bladder to track my overall PnL.
Support & Guidance
The team - and everyone at J.P. Morgan really - was approachable and eager to help whenever I needed to ask a question. What is more, people frequently reached out to me to check how I was doing and whether I needed any professional or personal help during my internship. They created a safe place to ask questions that enabled me to grow.
Culture
I think the culture was built around opennes and support - which as an intern I very much appreciated. J.P. Morgan is an excellent place for anyone who seeks excellence and constant learning as the Company provides a variety of opportunities and resources to learn and develop a solid, T-shaped knowledge base.
