    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Learn technologies that are used through the company and get involved in projects that can be actually even deployed (if they are good enough). You definitely have to do all this stuff like taking calls that might not interest you and some formalities of the company but generally it can get really interesting because there are some really good software engineers with a lot of expertise that can make the whole experience really invaluable end.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • A lot of AWS, a bit of salesforce (which wasn't my personal preference) and a lot of Javascript (react, node, express in my case). Additionally many skills in terms of communication, collaboration, working in a team, being part of agile development methods, become better on your leadership skills and additionally get a lo of technical expertise makes the company give you some invaluable experience and development of your skills. Generally a lot of development on existing skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Not as much initially, but it improved a lot in the final 15 days where I got a project and I finished it! My line manager really tried to involve me in the activities of her squad. However I didn't really want to work on salesforce as I am a programmer and therefore she assigned me on a really interesting full stack AWS project where I had all the responsibility for the design of the backend.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • A lot of support but there are still some blockers that they counter completely some efforts. However there is a fair amount of effort to overcome these. The manager was all the time on my side and she was trying not only to provide me with her personal support but also introduce me with other members of our squads which assured me that I can ask anything whenever I really wanted to. Generally a lot of help.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone's really approachable and I have never witnessed any mishandling of a situation. The employees are really eager to help :). They were actually making the command stand behind its values and each one of us was feeling welcomed in the work place. Many positive experiences in the day to day activities and many times that I felt that I need any other kind of support someone was always there for me showing me actual interest.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • From 1-10 I would say that it's a 7. Generally everything was great but I feel that I should have been asked in advance on which specific department of my stream I would be more interested as the selection was random and I lost a lot of time by trying to get on an interesting project. Generally all the interns where amazing and everyone was happy to help me whenever I needed any sort of help.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Centrica
  • Make sure before anything starts to ask from the company to let you be in contact as early as possible with your line manager as this process takes a lot o time and you might find your self doing something that you are not really enjoying. On the other hand try to connect early , and don't be scared to contact whoever you are interested to meet otherwise you might not have time to do that later on in the placement.
