Overview
The role consists of collaborating with team members on the appointment of consultants, tracking project budgets, potential client market research, creating progress reports based on weekly site visits. It also included managing both asbestos and risk registers, whilst also attending meetings and carrying out general ad-hoc work.
Skills
Coming into this role was a new experience for me as I had no experience in relation to this specific industry. However, this was remedied with the provision of continuous training and support, which has not only benefited my presenting and communication skills but has helped me develop more industry specific skills such as navigating debt recovery, creating risk registers, carrying out a project handover post programme completion. But ultimately l learnt to progress in any business one must leverage on generating your own opportunities and building others awareness of you within and throughout the business.
Responsibilities
To some degree yes, when I put myself in the position to take it on, but a common narrative I was met with was 'we don't want to give you too much responsibility or expose you to too many projects as you are only here with us for 10 weeks', which was deflating as I new I could offer so much more, but had to accept the reality of behind those statements. Although when I was given responsibility some tasks were the admin based but others provided me with exposure into the role.
Support & Guidance
I would definitely say the people at Mace truly make it into the fantastic company that they are today. Throughout my internship I was met with an abundance of support and guidance during every step, even beyond my immediate team, line manager and buddy. Mace truly embodies collaborative approach to personal development. Although I would say that general guidance with problems and feedback was met with understanding but could have been more informative
Culture
Welcoming! One thing mace has really mastered is the community of people and the way they engage with each other with a level of respect and understanding. However, due to the sheer size of the company there is room for improvement in intra-team/engine intersectionality and engagement.
Your Impressions
At first I was apprehensive as I wasn't getting a lot of work, but as time progressed and I got into my stride with my team, everything began to become really familiar and I felt like I was finally a part of Mace. At that moment I truly began to enjoy my internship, I began to look forward to my site visits, I became excited about attending networking and social events, which really encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. Looking back this experience really challenged me and had several 'arc' moments that had me questioning why I was here and whether this was the right decision. But now I can happily say that this internship was a risk worth taking, which I would take all over again if I was presented with the opportunity to do so.
Yes
Speak to everyone, no matter there role. This experience is just for you to advertise your yourself to the company, it is also for you to see if Mace is a good fit for you. So with that in mind try say yes to every opportunity you are presented with, even the mundane tasks, you never know who your audience might be. Challenge yourself to put yourself in the position to create your own opportunities, if there's a project your interested in engage, express your interest. Also try attend all gatherings and social events, join networks, familiarise yourself with the company but also be observant and see were value could be added. Lastly, bring your authentic self to work.
