Overview
Internal and client meetings, individual calculations of Transfer Values for members of schemes that are set to retire. Monthly basis updates (differ from scheme-to-scheme) to keep any calculations up to date on most recent market conditions
Skills
Excel training, internal software, pensions legislation history, calculating/ revaluing pensions over time, research & presentation skills
Responsibilities
Yes, I was treated as a graduate and given full responsibility of work - as there is a good review process in place, you are able to make mistakes that will be picked up before it reaches the client. Opportunities to sit in on client meetings
Support & Guidance
Colleagues were always available for questions on Teams chats and calls, and multiple 'catch-up' sessions were in place to talk through any more general support I needed
Culture
Very sociable (particularly as it was Summer), with lots of events to attend to meet colleagues. The interns arranged a social event after work which was attended by around 50 colleagues.
Your Impressions
It was an amazing placement - I learnt a lot about the pensions industry and the workplace in general and built a strong network of friends and colleagues
Yes
Be open to learning - as Retirement/Actuarial Sciences is quite a niche area (particularly if not studied for your university degree) there is a lot of learning and training to undertake so be enthusiastic and prepared
