Overview
The department that I was in was Program Management - Regulations Reporting. My role involved helping my team better track their book of work and help understand key areas that can be made more efficient and finding ways to do so. I was therefore creating dashboards to help visualize our work during a particular time period. As this working environment is quite dynamic, there was always something new that I was learning and working on. However, using key software tools like excel and tableau was consistent throughout all the project that I was involved in.
Skills
I have definitely developed my excel and tableau skills throughout my internship. We also got advanced PowerPoint training using a J.P.Morgan specific PowerPoint extension that helped make presentations look professional for internal use but also for clients. Along with this, there was a great deal of soft skills that I have developed like team-work and networking. There was many opportunities to learn from people in your team but also from other departments and regions by shadowing them and learning what their working day looks like but also building the wider knowledge about the company.
Responsibilities
During my internship, I definitely felt like I was given a great amount of responsibility that allowed me to really ensure that the work I was delivering was to a high standard. I was given the freedom to really explore what the team does and look for ways that our process can be improved and I really enjoyed this aspect of my time as an intern. I was constantly in communication with my manager and team for additional work that I could do and they made sure that I always had something to do.
Support & Guidance
There were various support and guidance provided to interns. Firstly, I was allocated a buddy and a mentor both of whom were there to help if I had any questions or concerns. There was also the recruitment team that help support hours in case we wanted to reach out to them. There was also the specific team we were working with and our manager who was always there if you needed help or wanted to raise any issues.
Culture
The company culture at J.P.Morgan was outstanding, everyone was friendly and welcoming. During my initial days, my team made sure that I was settling in nicely and were really patient with all my questions. Even on the wider team, everyone was happy to answer any questions you had but also take some time out to speak with you and guide you if needed. Even speaking with Executive Directors and Managing Directors, I found that they were approachable and friendly.
Your Impressions
I extremely enjoyed my time at J.P.Morgan! Firstly, the company culture is amazing as everyone is really friendly but more specifically my manager and team taught me a lot about the financial industry but also helped developed my soft-skills. The work that I was involved in was really interesting and I felt valued and heard within my team. There was also a lot of opportunities to meet fellow interns and talk to them about your shared experiences of being an intern.
Yes
I would say when doing interviews and assessment centers - be yourself and make sure that you want the role that you are applying for. Do your research as to what are the various departments you could be working in and read up on the company's values and recent news. Ask questions to the interviewers regarding their experience at the company as it is a two-way process and you want make sure that you are enthusiastic about working at the company.
