Overview
I was assigned a team and was given tasks to work on that were directly related to the team's product. I was given constant support from my direct supervisor and my internship experience was really smooth. I had to attend daily and weekly stand-ups and inform my team about my progress as everyone in the team did, and I also got to do a demo of my internship's main project.
Skills
I learned many new technical skills, certain libraries and frameworks that my team used both for testing and development purposes. I also learned many new concepts, like cloud computing, software testing, and others related to my day-to-day work. The company also helped me develop my networking skills through various events that involved other interns in my program and senior colleagues.
Responsibilities
Yes and this suited my personality. It was what I wanted from an internship - rather than doing some simple projects independent of the team's product, I got to actually work on the product and was assigned tasks that were directly in the product development critical path. This helped me to learn new skills much faster and I really felt part of the team.
Support & Guidance
My direct supervisor was always there to assist me when I ran into trouble, which happened a lot during my first few weeks as an intern. He and other team members provided me with constructive feedback about my work. Sometimes, I was not given the answer directly, but rather the means to find out the answer myself, which really helped me to further develop my engineering and research skills.
Culture
The office I was in was more like a tech company, rather than a bank. There are mostly developers and HR people in Glasgow, so it was the perfect environment for me as an engineer. It was an open office, so I got to interact with people on my floor every day, which was great. Everyone was very friendly towards me and I had a great time in the office.
Your Impressions
I had a great summer here at J.P. Morgan. Met many new people and established connections that would certainly be helpful to me in my future career development. The fact that I never used my right to work from home says it all - I went to the office every day, excited about new technological problems I would run into, new skills I would develop, and new people I would meet.
Yes
Provide clear descriptions of what you want from your internship when you are sent a survey for that - the company really takes into account what you want to do during your summer and will place you in a team that would help you to do so. Take all networking opportunities in this huge company, they will certainly be helpful to you further in your career. And most importantly, enjoy your summer!
