Overview
My daily role was to look after my project, on overdrafts and see the trends that were ongoing, and analyze it further, by speaking to various people within the bank. I would also need to evaluate an area of efficiency, in existing processes, in order to make sure we can minimize lags and gaps. I was also involved in various meetings daily to discuss the financials of our desk, and our area in the market, such as currencies, etc.
Skills
I learned plenty of new skills and developed my communication, excel , public speaking, presentational skills. I had to speak to my manager on a day to day basis, go over the existing deliverables, and speak about what are the next steps for the project. I used a lot of excel formulas, pivot tables, vlookups, and learnt a lot of data analysis, whereby I had to ensure the data pulled through reconciled with our general ledgers, and was not incorrectly brought in.
Responsibilities
I was given adequate amount of responsibility, and ability to manage my workloads effectively. I had 3 projects ongoing, and would always have things to do, throughout, such as analysis, data sorting, data entry, data cleaning, pivot table analysis. I would also be tasked to do my own independent learning, from the company educational website, to ensure I was learning things that were required for us, by the regulators, and as per the firmwide policies.
Support & Guidance
I received guidance from 2 areas, particularly my own team, and my campus recruitment team. Any questions regarding the internship, formalities, reviews, final offer were directed to campus recruitment. My own team aided my learning, about the bank, and our desk. I was also introduced to other people in different areas of the bank , to learn other areas about the bank. I also continually got taught new things, or better ways of doing tasks, if I was not doing them efficiently.
Culture
When I first walked in , I thought this firm would be very competitive, and cut-throat. However, the culture, was far better than I had expected or even seen at any other firm. I was able to reach out to senior management, who would be happy to give their own time to speak to me, and guide me generally or specifically if the need be. I was also quite often involved in various socials and team building activities, which made me feel welcomed.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my internship a lot, this is my second internship with the bank, and my experience exceeded expectations once again. I had the best team, unlimited scope to learn, various responsibilities, opportunities to network etc. I was also really happy with the events hosted by campus recruiters, which were to give us a networking opportunity around the bank, as well as give us a feel for what it is like to work with the bank.
Yes
I would really tell everyone to properly research their areas of interest, as JPM is a massive company and has a variety of opportunities available for you. It is also important to speak to people on LinkedIn, or reach out to current graduates or interns, and get their advice about their role, and scope of work. This will aid in networking, as well as help truly understand the day to day of a role. Further, don't be afraid to try a job in the bank, as you always have the opportunity to move around, as the bank is highly keen on internal mobility.
