Overview
Each day is varied. My tasks range from creating company profiles, taking minutes when attending calls, working on presentations (for various transactions such as an ABB, Private Placement, IPO, Rights Issue) and then incorporating corrections before it is used to send to the client or in prior discussion materials in the process. In addition, there have been various market calls including with the team to gain an overview of the market and ECM activity.
Skills
This opportunity has honed my organisation, communication, teamwork and analytic skills amongst others. Working on several tasks at a time has helped me in terms of prioritisation and ensuring I am organised to meet all relevant deadlines. Networking with bankers across teams has helped me to build a bigger picture of Investment Banking; asking questions, shadowing and working on tasks has enabled me get a better understanding of the life of an analyst in ECM.
Responsibilities
Yes, one of my first tasks was to create company profiles, work considered to be the job of a first-year analyst. Nevertheless, I enjoyed starting in the deep end, pulling together information and analysing the financial statements to compile this work. Everyone in my team trust me with the work, such as taking minutes on a call, and hence they give me the responsibility to carry out the task on their behalf.
Support & Guidance
Very much and I was extremely grateful for this. Everyone in the team was super happy to answer any questions and help when we were stuck on a task. Each intern was given a buddy (someone junior in their team) and a mentor (someone senior in another team) who were very happy to sit down with us regularly and ensure we were happy and getting as much out of the internship as we wanted.
Culture
Incredible. I think DB has such a good culture in terms of everyone being super friendly and willing to help whether they are in your team or not. The MDs are also very open to helping you achieve your personal and professional goals.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship at DB and think HR did a superb job in terms of organising the programme. In addition to first-hand experience with tasks in the team, we worked on an intern project which was great to initiate the idea, work on it from start to finish and present it. There were several networking events amongst the interns as well as MD breakfast sessions and panel events, meeting inspiring senior bankers.
Yes
Bring your best self and personality to the interviews as it is important to show the interviewers how you stand out, whether that is a strength in languages, public speaking or a hobby.
