Overview
As an Intern you mainly focus on the admin tasks but there are also a lot of technical aspects you get insight into through completing tax computations and sitting in on clients meetings as well as HMRC calls and correspondence. Always try to ask to get to sit in on client calls and meetings!.Taking development into your own hands is key.
Skills
I developed my understanding of Tax, especially what a Job in Tax actually entails. I went into the Job expecting it to be almost only numbers but that's not the case. There is a large amount of writing and understanding that takes place especially when advising clients and ensuring clear communication is vital.
Responsibilities
Limited amount of responsibility, mainly due to the fact you don't have enough technical training to really know the ins and outs of what your doing. You are given important task but these rarely (if ever) go directly to clients without going through multiple checks by the higher ups.
Support & Guidance
This was the main positive of the internship, the team was great and really supportive, made me feel really comfortable about asking questions. Also a very informal atmosphere around the office which is nice because you do spend a lot of time together.
Culture
Very relaxed and informal, which in my opionion makes it easier for new people to integrate themselves.
Your Impressions
I did enjoy it, especially as I had no other real plans for the summer - it was an infinite upgrade on doing nothing and having a company like BDO on your CV won't do you any harm!
Yes
Be yourself and be open-minded about what your walking into. The team will welcome you as long as they get the feeling your trying.
