    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I got the same type of work that would be assigned to a trainee. Before starting a client, I would have to inform them of my involvement with the engagement, and request access to the audit file. During client work, They would give me work to do, and answer any questions I had (from a specific section in the workbook, to getting a walkthrough on how to do the paper).

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I learned how to truly be reliable. You learn faster by being open about what you are good at and what you are bad at. BDO has a culture which puts you (as an individual) first, and that is echoed by the employees. They will be happy to help you if you are struggling, and even happier to see you succeed!

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. all the audit work I done contributed towards the audit. I looked at actual client data, and filled out workbooks in the actual audit file, took part in meetings with the client and even went to client site to do work. I was treated as an employee by both the business, and the employees.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a full week of introductions and training, this gave me an idea of what to expect. During client work, I received as much as I asked for. Whenever I had a problem, I had to ask. This is because in an engagement, everyone has work to do, so you wont have someone shadowing you 24/7, so if you need help, ask and they will be happy to help.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • They embody their core values. The office is really relaxed, and you can pretty much have a casual conversation with anyone (from trainees to partners). BDO has a work hard, play hard mentality where everybody does their best at work, but also has regular socials every week (which is usually at a bar). During my time there, I never really felt like an intern, I felt like I was apart of the company!

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • There was nothing I didn't enjoy really. The client work was interesting, the office (Baker street) is amazing, the work culture is amazing! The only thing I would say is that if you do take part in the internship, you have to be prepared to learn. It isn't easy, but if you go in prepared to learn and be yourself, then you will enjoy your time at the company!

  • 7. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BDO
  • BDO has a work hard, play hard mentality. The work life balance is amazing, however, you have to be prepared to learn, to ask questions, to engage with the internship, to talk to other interns and employees, to be yourself, else you wont enjoy your time there. If you go in prepared to learn and work hard, you will be more than compensated for your efforts!
