    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was shadowing someone every week and completing tasks such as summarising what's included in a company policy, updating and working on testing sheets. I also attended team meetings and client meetings where I would write notes. One of the meetings I attended was at a client site. I also completed a CSR project with interns in other departments.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I developed my Microsoft excel skills, it felt like every week I learnt how to do something different on excel. I learnt to be more vocal and ask more question and the importance of doing so. I do feel like I can communicate better especially when I don't understand something and presenting any findings in my work.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I did get involved in the work that they were doing for clients and even attended a meeting/workshop on a client site. I was involved in some of the testing work they do for their clients and flag things that could affect the clients. I also made minor changes to a report that they would show a client.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had a People Manager and a Buddy who I could go to for anything. Everyone in the department was really open to answering questions and made sure that I knew that I could come to them for anything. The people that I shadowed made sure that everything was clear to me and would check on me to see how I was getting on with the tasks. The company also had training modules that we had access to.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was great. They have different networks within the company such as the CEDAR network which is the Celebrating Ethnic Diversity And Races Network and I got to have a virtual lunch with some of the members. There was also a company-wide event going on called the Summer Games that was going on for a few weeks. There are also opportunities to volunteer and get involved in CSR.

  • 7. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BDO
  • Be prepared to explain why you applied to BDO, what attracted to the company, what you hope to get out of the experience, talk about your skills and any past experiences you may have that would make you a good fit for the company and maybe any skills you may want to develop when it comes to the interview. When it comes to the assessment centre, make sure your contributing to any group work you may do and also listen to the other people in your group. If you ever disagree with someone in your group then speak up and try to explain your point of view but in a respectful way. If someone disagrees with you then try not to get defensive, listen to their point of view and you could see things from a different point of view and maybe even learn something. You should also make sure you know how to present what you worked on. Try and not worry about questions even if it's just for clarification.
