Overview
My role as an intern is working on my project, and performing lab work under strict health and safety rules. I then analyse the raw data to see any correlation and trends and then feed them back to my supervisor at weekly meetings. Also, there are plenty of opportunities to learn about the company and the business as a whole, going on various tours and attending talks. As well as network with others in the industry.
Skills
Yes, I have developed a range of skills whilst being at this internship. I have developed teamwork and communication skills, as often I was in the lab with my supervisor working on a piece of equipment for example. I have also learnt to time manage and stay organised, as often there was a lot of tasks that I was given. I do also feel I have learnt alot about the pharmaceutical business now, more than I knew before.
Responsibilities
During my internship I was given quite a lot of responsibility, the hours were very flexible. So I was able to choose what time I came in the morning and went home. As long as I met my weekly hours. I felt like I was free to steer my project in whatever direction I felt necessary, and I felt comfortable talking to my supervisor. After my safety training as well I was able to enter the labs by myself and do work independently.
Support & Guidance
I did receive quite alot of support from my supervisor and team manager during my internship. From the first day my supervisor was always friendly and approachable, and I felt that if i had any problems then I could come to him. I also had a lot of weekly meetings where I could provide him with an update on my work and there would be opportunities to give feedback if necessary. I did not receive any mentors or buddies such as another placement student of apprentice, but I felt this would be helpful. I felt that from the wider team there wasnt much support, the team felt somewhat distant during my time.
Culture
The company culture and general atmosphere was great. Outside of work there was a variety of events to take part in. I especially enjoyed the AZ inspire workshops, that took me on tours of the packing plant. Which I felt was very inspiring and eye-opening. I also attended a few socials during my internship, and they were very fun, and was a good chance to get to know the team more. The company itself is very nice to work in with modern furnishings and buildings, motivating you to work.
Your Impressions
I did enjoy my placement, I would love to come back again as a pre-reg pharmacist or as part of one of the graduate schemes which is what AstraZeneca offer. I like the work culture that the companies offer and the internship definitely was not what I thought it would be, but the experiences that I have gained have all been very positive. One suggestion that I would make however, is to introduce all the summer interns at the start. So we all know each other and can be a point of contact, as it can be quite daunting at the start of role in a new company.
Yes
For the interviews, be confident, smile and be yourself. Network with people in the company, it is useful and interesting to know people's career choices and pathways on how they got into the industry. Don't forget to get to know other interns too, they are in the same boat as you and so it is a good support bubble. Don't be afraid to ask questions, so you can get the most of your experience here.
