Overview
Internship situated within the GCN department. Day-to-day work included lots of MATLAB, Simulink and Python programming. Designing autopilots, guidance loops, AI, to name a few. Work for the placement was a joint summer project with some other disciplines' interns working on a collaborative task for 10 weeks.
Skills
Developed skills massively in Matlab, Simulink, Python. Greatly developed Control Engineering and Maths skills as well as exposure to AI in the industry. Large presentation at the end of the placement to seniors, therefore building on presenting skills. Daily interaction building upon interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities
Responsible for my own work and driving the direction of the project, with guidance from technical experts in the field in the form of my supervisor. Responsible for meeting deadlines unprompted, along with ensuring the project was developing in the right direction without constant input from supervisors. Attempting to solve problems myself before seeking help. Was responsible for a large and meaningful piece of work.
Support & Guidance
Just the right amount. Had a Technical Coordinator who was there for queries relating to HR/Business Processes and general on-boarding and wellbeing. Head of function (Line Manager) and the project, guiding the project direction of it and interested in milestones. A day-to-day supervisor to help with work-related queries, and a buddy on the Graduate scheme to help with anything else. A very good support system that is all very accessible and friendly.
Culture
A very positive culture and atmosphere, lots of social events, activities, charity outreach events to get involved with if you so choose. Lots of diversity initiatives and talks, as well as charity book sales, bake sales, donation pledges etc. Lots of on-site sports teams such as inter-departmental football tournaments and department teams in other sports. Work-life balance was great, allowing time to relax.
Your Impressions
Have really enjoyed my time at the company, cannot think of a fault. Due to come back as part of the graduate scheme following my graduation.
