Overview
Over the course of two days, I attended sessions hosted by different Allen and Overy employees. This improved my commercial knowledge as I learnt more about the capital markets; ESG and banking. At the end of each session I could ask questions, such as how the economic situation impacted the deals that Allen and Overy were advising on at the time.
Skills
I have developed my commercial awareness and networking skills. My commercial awareness has been developed by learning more about the many sectors Allen and Overy offers. For example, I have learnt about methods of alternative dispute resolution such as arbitration, and why it may be preferred over other methods of alternative dispute resolution (as arbitrators often have specific knowledge that is relevant to the case). My networking skills improved by talking with Allen and Overy employees.
Business Insight
It was an incredible experience - particularly learning about areas of Allen and Overy that aren’t law-focused. For example, I had limited knowledge about Fuse, when it is a significant part of the company and one of the reasons why Allen and Overy remains one of the most innovative law firms globally.
Culture
Allen and Overy’s culture is amazing. All employees are well-aligned with the firm’s core values: thoughtful, open, ambitious and inventive. I felt highly welcomed by the company and motivated to pursue a career in commercial law because of the people I met at Allen and Overy.
Your Impressions
I greatly enjoyed the insight. I loved having the opportunity to network with employees; ask questions about specific practice areas and to maintain regular contact with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] (who has been extremely helpful). This experience has been invaluable and provided me with knowledge and the confidence to pursue my goal of becoming a solicitor.
Yes
I would advise them to research the firm in depth; provide evidence for the questions they answer and learn how mergers and acquisitions are structured/potential issues that could arise with these deals before completing the phone interview.
