Overview
Working on the desk with the team, being given different tasks from the manager. Networking with employees on the Bank and Securities side. Once a week there is a speaker session given by a director of another team to educate all the interns on other divisions. Working on the group project doing research and meetings.
Skills
Learnt more Excel functions and a better idea of how a bank is run and the different teams communicate.
Responsibilities
IDM generally is a quieter team and the work is the same on a weekly basis so there is a limit to what tasks you can be given/skills you can develop. You should actively reach out to team members for tasks.
Support & Guidance
The team, manager and buddy were fantastic and incredibly supportive. HR is easy to contact and also very helpful with all issues.
Culture
There is a large work from home culture so the office isn’t too busy on most days. This can mean seeing less people around which misses out on the chance to meet new people and develop a bond however everyone is lovely when you reach out to them for a chat. There are not many socials organised within the teams however the interns normally go for drinks after work. The office is very multicultural. The demographic is generally 35 years + and is a mix of male and female.
Your Impressions
I learnt a lot from the internship about banking and the different teams which I didn’t know of before. I’ve met an amazing network of people who have made the experience enjoyable. The day can be monotonous and repetitive within the middle office teams due to the nature of the work. The socials organised by HR were fun and allowed the interns to bond.
Yes
Ensure you know about the team you apply for so you can ask for specific rotations within the 10 weeks! This means you will gain more exposure and can make a better informed decision as to where you want to work after graduating. Once on the programme, it is difficult to move to other teams.
